Self Fulfilling Fallacy PDF
Written by Marcia Karasek, Business Development, PartnerSHIP and ScholarSHIP

You’ve started your business, developed your product, and people are buying it! Thats's great!

So ... you may begin to consider expanding your space so that you can hold more inventory to meet the demand. You'll need equipment, of course, and supplies. Then you will need to hire someone to manage that inventory, package and ship your products.

Do you really want to live this self-fulfilling fantasy? There are a few things to think about before you do.

Are you ready to make a long-term commitment to a building, equipment, supplies and staffing costs?
What about seasonality? Do you want to carry the fixed costs and overhead that goes with it in the months when your sales are lower so that you have the capacity for the good months?

Will a third party be able to take the same care with packaging as my own staff would?  Absolutely.  This is the core purpose of a professional fulfillment service.

We know what it takes and hire the best people to maximize quality and efficiency.  We can often make suggestions to improve the effectiveness of packaging to reduce returns and improve presentation to your customers.

As you come on board we carefully examine your requirements to develop specific training instructions for all of the staff who will work with your products then put in the checks and balances into our processes to insure accuracy and that your wishes are executed every time for every shipment.

But I can’t afford to pay for fulfillment services right now.

Well, if you really look at what you spend now and compare that to the total cost of using a fulfillment service, you will likely find that a professional company will be able to provide you with better pricing on shipping and packaging material because their overall volume enables them to spread their fixed costs and overhead across many customers and thousands of shipments.

Using a professional fulfillment company you get volume savings and a completely variable fulfillment expense based upon the number of shipments instead of fixed month to month expenses.  When you consider the cost of labor, facility, equipment, packaging, and shipping cost you will often find that using a fulfillment service may actually save you money over self fulfilling and eliminate the risk of long term overhead cost.

You also get the added benefit of not having to worry about managing  your people, and worrying about someone not showing up to work on a busy Monday in your peak season.
